Introduction: Starting a New Etsy Store

Wow, time flies! My Etsy clipart store just turned one, and hitting 3,000 sales with nearly £8,000 in revenue feels surreal. 🎉 Learn more about that journey here.

This success has sparked a new idea: launching Tumblers by Clip Craft.

Why a new store? Well, I’ve got these awesome tools for creating clipart, so why not use them to dive into the digital tumbler wrap niche? It’s all about boosting revenue without adding extra costs—a smart business move, right?

Plus, I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned over the past year and grow this new store even faster. It’s not just about business; it’s perfect content for this blog. I’m here to share my journey and help others do the same.

This blog post is just the beginning of a whole series that focuses on starting a new Etsy store, growing your new store and making sales selling digital products!

Etsy Store Set Up: A Step-by-Step Guide

Setting up Tumblers by Clip Craft is an exciting journey, and having a checklist made it all more manageable. Here’s how I tackled each step to get my new Etsy store up and running.

Planning: Laying the Groundwork

Pick Your Niche

I focused on digital tumbler wrap designs, tapping into a popular and growing market. The niche you choose must be something you can be passionate about so that you keep creating more and more products and enjoy the process. Etsy is a numbers game afterall, you need a high volume of quality products to get to daily sales. Not sure what niche you would like to go for? Choose a Name

Tumblers by Clip Craft felt like the perfect fit, capturing the essence of my new venture. If you are struggling to come up with a name, check out this free Etsy Store Name Generator.

Trademark Search and Domain Name Check

Check that no one has already trademarked your chosen name (trademark checking varies by country, so please do your own research here and consider that Etsy is a global marketplace and there is a high chance that the majority of your future customers will be US based) and then check to see if the custom domain is available.
You want to snag this straight away and ensure you get a .com domain! Namecheap are excellent and have super affordable domain names available.

Set Up Email Address

Created a dedicated email for customer inquiries and business operations using your new domain name. Again Namecheap provide an email service that is very affordable however I personally use Google workspace. I chose a Google workspace plan as I wanted the cloud storage available in google drive for storing all of my digital creations, consider this when deciding who to go with.

Opening the Store: Getting Started

Open Your Store

I created a new Etsy store, a new email address was required here. Etsy requires you to have a unique email address for each store that you have.

Add First Listing

Etsy prompts you to create your first listing on set up, you can fill this out with dummy data for now to move past this step and then update it with a real product later on once you have created your first digital product.

Add in Your Tax Number, Credit Card, and Bank Account

These are all requirements when creating your new Etsy store. Consider how you intend to run your new store, will you be registering as a sole trader or registering a company? Regardless of either, it’s a good idea to set up a separate business bank account first to keep your business finances separate. You would need to do this prior to creating your Etsy store so that you can add your business bank details at this stage.

Set Up Two-Factor Authentication

Be sure to set up two factor authentication to protect your store!

Optimizing Your Profile: Making It Shine

I hopped on over to Canva and designed a logo and banner for my new store.

Add a Profile Picture

Chose a friendly and professional image to connect with customers, ensure that it’s an image of yourself! People want to see who they are buying from!

Add your Store Announcement

Your store announcement is prime retail space to promote your freebie and build that email list! There will be more about building an email list in a later blog post but for now, I highly recommend mailerlite. It’s free until you have 1000+ subscribers and allows you to build landing pages, email automations and plenty more.
Next you want to add in a friendly message about your store and what you sell. It’s also a good idea to drop your store hours and time zone in here too, this helps to manage buyers expectations if they message you directly.

Set Up Sections for Store

Organized products into clear categories to help customers find what they need.
You only get 20 sections for your store, so it’s a good idea to do some pre planning here and think about what categories of products you are going to make. You can always change them at a later date too!

Complete your about section

Your about section gives you the opportunity to showcase who YOU are and what you create. Be sure to fill out this section fully with a bio, video and 5 photos with captions. Etsy favours stores that fill out their profile fully.

If you haven’t already set up social media accounts for your new store using the domain you secured in earlier steps. Even if you don’t intend to post to all of them to start with (baby steps right?!) at least set them up so no one can grab your store name handle. Pinterest is an absolute must have for an Etsy store as its a visual search engine.

Approve Shop Policies and Add FAQ Section

Etsy guides you through this with their recommended shop policies. As we are selling digital products you want to set returns and exchanges to: No returns or exchanges and this is in line with Etsy’s policy on the sale of digital products.
Be sure to set up a privacy policy, Etsy provides you with a template that you can insert your business and contact details into.
As for FAQs, so far I have this one as it’s likely to be the most question or query you get for digital products. Over time I will add more as I start to recieve sales and interact with my customers for this new niche.

Sales: Encouraging Purchases

Add Multi-Purchase Promo Code

Offering discounts like “Buy 5, Save 35%” will entice customers to make larger purchases and increase your average order value. It’s a good idea to pop this discount in your shop announcement and perhaps even display it on your store banner. I also create a listing slide that advertises this discount so all my customers see it!
I use the encourage bigger order option, set it to 35% (or whatever you choose) and 5 items. Etsy lets you set this up for 1 month at a time. Therefore, I go ahead and create this discount 12 times to cover all 12 months of the year, so I can literally set it and forget it!

Conclusion

Having this checklist was a game-changer, keeping me organized and focused. Each step brought me closer to launching a store I’m proud of, and I can’t wait to see how Tumblers by Clip Craft grows!

I hope my guide on how to start an Etsy store was useful to you.
